The focus of our toolkit is to assist teachers in using UDL tools for Multiple Means of Representation; specifically we are looking at guideline two, which provides options for language, mathematical expressions, and symbols. Specifically, we looked at options for:
2.1 Clarify vocabulary and symbols
2.2 Clarify syntax and structure
2.3 Support decoding of text, mathematical notation, and symbols
2.4 Promote understanding across languages
2.5 Illustrate through multiple media
Through our learning during the Universal Design for Learning course at the University of Alberta, we learned of many different UDL tools for the classroom. We wanted our specific focus to look at tools that are available to help teachers and students when there is no pre-made digital book available for the prescribed program of studies. We focused on three areas common in classrooms which are premade text, pre-made videos and the opportunity to create one’s own text, videos and other means of representation.
